Higher resolution is not automatically better. Do I really need 600 DPI if I only want to view my photos on my computer?

A photograph scanned at a low resolution cannot be magically converted into a genuinely high-resolution scan later. What is the difference between DPI and pixels?
These terms are often confused. DPI (dots per inch) describes scanning resolution. Pixels describe the dimensions of the resulting digital image. For example, a 4 x 6-inch photograph scanned at 600 DPI produces approximately 2,400 x 3,600 pixels. The number of pixels is ultimately what determines how much digital image information you have available for viewing, cropping, editing, and printing. The important point is that DPI and original photo size work together. A 600 DPI scan of a small photograph does not necessarily contain as many pixels as a 600 DPI scan of a large photograph.
Should old black-and-white photographs be scanned in color?

other unusual film formats?

Not every scanner or photo scanning service can properly handle older film formats.
Small formats such as 110 and Minox contain very small image areas and require appropriate film holders and sufficiently high optical resolution. The correct equipment matters. Simply placing an unusual negative into a standard holder and scanning it at a higher advertised DPI does not necessarily produce a better result. True optical resolution, appropriate film holders, focus, lighting, and scanning technique all affect the final image.
Does a higher advertised DPI always mean a better scanner?
No. This is an important distinction when comparing scanning services or consumer scanners. Some scanners advertise extremely high resolutions that are achieved through interpolation rather than genuine optical resolution. Interpolation creates additional pixels mathematically; it does not necessarily capture additional photographic detail. For archival work, true optical resolution is much more important than an impressive number printed on a scanner's specifications sheet. How important is color depth?

Color depth determines how many shades of color or gray can be represented.
For normal photographic scanning, 24-bit color is common and produces millions of possible colors. Higher bit-depth scanning can provide additional information during demanding restoration and color-correction workflows.
For a family archive, the quality of the scanner and the overall scanning workflow are generally more important than simply choosing the largest possible bit-depth number.
Should I scan everything at the highest possible resolution?
Usually, no. Scanning every photograph at an extremely high resolution creates enormous files, increases processing and storage requirements, and may not provide any meaningful improvement.
A better approach is to match the scanning resolution to:
The physical size of the original
The amount of detail it contains
How important the photograph is
Whether restoration is planned
Whether you intend to enlarge it
How much storage you want to use
For most standard family prints, 600 DPI is a very good all-purpose choice.
What should I do with the digital files after scanning?

Don't consider the project finished when the scanner produces the files. Your digital photographs should be organized and backed up.
A practical system is to maintain:
Master files: High-quality TIFF or other archival-quality files.
Working files: JPEG copies used for editing, printing, and sharing.
Backup copies: Additional copies stored separately from your primary computer.

Digitization does not replace the need to protect the originals.
